The information below is collected from state licensure boards or regulatory agencies responsible for regulating the professions of audiology and/or speech-language pathology in the state of New Mexico. ASHA Pathway: The ASHA CCC is accepted as proof of meeting some requirements for licensure for both professions.  

Audiologist

  • Master’s or doctoral degree

Audiologists who dispense hearing aids must apply for an endorsement, must have six months’ experience in dispensing through practical examination and a facility for dispensing, must pass a jurisprudence exam, and must not be guilty of any specified activities.

Speech-Language Pathologist

  • Master’s degree
  • Clinical fellowship

Both

  • National exam
  • Jurisprudence exam

Continuing Education: 20 hours every two years

ASLP-IC: New Mexico is not a member state of the Audiology & Speech-Language Pathology Interstate Compact (ASLP-IC). Information on the current status of the ASLP-IC can be found on the ASLP-IC website.

Telepractice: Providers must hold a state license and adhere to the same requirements as in-person practice.

Temporary Practice for Out-of-State Providers: No provisions.

  • License holders must be employed through the network of early intervention provider agencies in New Mexico.

Speech-Language Pathology Assistant

Health Care Setting: Speech-Language Pathology Apprentice

  • Must have bachelor’s degree in speech-language pathology or another field plus 30 semester hours in speech-language pathology
  • Must be enrolled in a master’s program and completing at least nine graduate hours per year
  • Must maintain a 3.0 in master’s degree coursework
  • A supervising speech-language pathologist may not supervise more than three apprentices at one time.
